Season 6, Podcast 127, Isaiah 66:1-24, “Peace, Like a River.”
To understand Isaiah 66, we simply must go back to the beginning of Isaiah and work through the entire book. Isaiah 66 is a summing up. Isaiah is speaking of the Second Coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. Four things are going to happen during the period of the Second Coming of Christ, all relating to the final gathering: (1) The wicked, whether Jew or Gentile, will be destroyed. (2) A righteous remnant of the House of Israel will be restored because they come to Christ. (3) The gentiles who come to Christ will be part of that gathering. They too will be the seed of Abraham. (4) It will become the Millennial Day for the righteous where there shall be “Peace, Like a River.” That has been Isaiah’s message from the beginning.
Isaiah 66:1
Thus saith the Lord, The heaven is my throne, and the earth is my footstool: where is the house that ye build unto me? and where is the place of my rest?
That question has already been answered for us.
Isaiah 2:2-5
And it shall come to pass in the last days, that the mountain of the Lord’s house shall be established in the top of the mountains, and shall be exalted above the hills; and all nations shall flow unto it. And many people shall go and say, Come ye, and let us go up to the mountain of the Lord, to the house of the God of Jacob; and he will teach us of his ways, and we will walk in his paths: for out of Zion shall go forth the law, and the word of the Lord from Jerusalem. And he shall judge among the nations, and shall rebuke many people: and they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruninghooks: nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more. O house of Jacob, come ye, and let us walk in the light of the Lord.
Only the righteous will be invited to his temple.
Isaiah 66:2
For all those things hath mine hand made, and all those things have been, saith the Lord: but to this man will I look, even to him that is poor and of a contrite spirit, and trembleth at my word.
Consider the words of David.
Psalm 24:3-4
“Who shall ascend into the hill of the Lord? or who shall stand in his holy place? He that hath clean hands, and a pure heart; who hath not lifted up his soul unto vanity, nor sworn deceitfully.”
The wicked, whether Jew or Gentile, will be excluded.
Isaiah 66:3
He that killeth an ox is as if he slew a man; he that sacrificeth a lamb, as if he cut off a dog’s neck; he that offereth an oblation, as if he offered swine’s blood; he that burneth incense, as if he blessed an idol. Yea, they have chosen their own ways, and their soul delighteth in their abominations.
The Lord is speaking of idol worshipers. Those who turn away from false gods and worship the true God are those who shall say, “Come ye, and let us go up to the mountain of the Lord, to the house of the God of Jacob; and he will teach us of his ways, and we will walk in his paths.” Again, let’s turn to David. Is he not speaking of ‘Peace, like a river?’
Psalm 1:1-6
Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful. But his delight is in the law of the Lord; and in his law doth he meditate day and night. And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper. The ungodly are not so: but are like the chaff which the wind driveth away. Therefore the ungodly shall not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous.
