Season 6, Podcast 101, Isaiah 44:1-10, “Beside Me there is no God Pt 1.”
The Lord reaffirms that he has chosen Israel, and that he is the creator.
Isaiah 44:1-2
Yet now hear, O Jacob my servant; and Israel, whom I have chosen: Thus saith the Lord that made thee, and formed thee from the womb, which will help thee; Fear not, O Jacob, my servant; and thou, Jesurun, whom I have chosen.
‘Jesurun,’ a reference to Israel, means ‘upright.’ Notice the perfect parallel lines which emphasize the major theme:
· Yet now hear, O Jacob my servant; and Israel, whom I have chosen.
· Fear not, O Jacob, my servant; and thou, Jesurun, whom I have chosen.
Verses 1 & 2 follow the pattern of ABBA.
A. Yet now hear, O Jacob my servant; and Israel, whom I have chosen.
B. Thus saith the Lord that made thee,
B. And formed thee from the womb, which will help thee
A. Fear not, O Jacob, my servant; and thou, Jesurun, whom I have chosen.
It is formalized. Poetic design of such meticulousness is not accidental or coincidental. It provides a structure from which to read the poem. Parallelism runs throughout the Book of Isaiah, thus tying important concepts together. Parallelism replaces the American use of chapters and verses or titles, headings, paragraphs, etc.
Notice how consciousness of parallelism helps us better understand the next verse:
Isaiah 44:3
A. For I will pour water upon him that is thirsty,
B. and floods upon the dry ground:
A. I will pour my spirit upon thy seed,
B. and my blessing upon thine offspring:
It is the image of the desert blossoming as a rose. The temporal image gives meaning to the spiritual image. Just as rain quinches thirst and irrigates dry soil that seeds or plants may grow, the spirit of the Lord does the same for the children of God who are compared to a seed. They will be showered with blessings. This brings to mind a similar image related to the law of tithing.
Malachi 3:8-12
Will a man rob God? Yet ye have robbed me. But ye say, Wherein have we robbed thee? In tithes and offerings. Ye are cursed with a curse: for ye have robbed me, even this whole nation. Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be meat in mine house, and prove me now herewith, saith the Lord of hosts, if I will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it. And I will rebuke the devourer for your sakes, and he shall not destroy the fruits of your ground; neither shall your vine cast her fruit before the time in the field, saith the Lord of hosts. And all nations shall call you blessed: for ye shall be a delightsome land, saith the Lord of hosts.
The next verse in Isaiah 44 is a completion of the image.
Isaiah 44:4
And they shall spring up as among the grass, as willows by the water courses.
Verse 4 modified both the temporal image and the spiritual image of verse 3. This is echoed in Psalm 1.
Psalm 1:1-3
Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful. But his delight is in the law of the Lord; and in his law doth he meditate day and night. And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper.
