Season 6, Podcast 96, Isaiah 40:12-31, “To Whom Will Ye Liken God.”
We all learn early in life, that is if we consider such things, that God is incomprehensible. The Lord revealed to Isaiah.
Isaiah 55:6-9
Seek ye the Lord while he may be found, call ye upon him while he is near: Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts: and let him return unto the Lord, and he will have mercy upon him; and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon. For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the Lord. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts.
The Lord informs Isaiah that he is the creator of the earth.
Isaiah 40:12
Who hath measured the waters in the hollow of his hand, and meted out heaven with the span, and comprehended the dust of the earth in a measure, and weighed the mountains in scales, and the hills in a balance?
The Lord revealed the same concept to Job.
Job 38:1-11
Then the Lord answered Job out of the whirlwind, and said, Who is this that darkeneth counsel by words without knowledge? Gird up now thy loins like a man; for I will demand of thee, and answer thou me. Where wast thou when I laid the foundations of the earth? declare, if thou hast understanding. Who hath laid the measures thereof, if thou knowest? or who hath stretched the line upon it? Whereupon are the foundations thereof fastened? or who laid the corner stone thereof; When the morning stars sang together, and all the sons of God shouted for joy? Or who shut up the sea with doors, when it brake forth, as if it had issued out of the womb? When I made the cloud the garment thereof, and thick darkness a swaddlingband for it, And brake up for it my decreed place, and set bars and doors, And said, Hitherto shalt thou come, but no further: and here shall thy proud waves be stayed?
The Lord establishes that compared to him man is nothing.
Isaiah 40:13-17
Who hath directed the Spirit of the Lord, or being his counsellor hath taught him? With whom took he counsel, and who instructed him, and taught him in the path of judgment, and taught him knowledge, and shewed to him the way of understanding? Behold, the nations are as a drop of a bucket, and are counted as the small dust of the balance: behold, he taketh up the isles as a very little thing. And Lebanon is not sufficient to burn, nor the beasts thereof sufficient for a burnt offering. All nations before him are as nothing; and they are counted to him less than nothing, and vanity.
Man cannot counsel the Lord but must take counsel from him. Isaiah continues.
Isaiah 40:18
To whom then will ye liken God? or what likeness will ye compare unto him?
The answer is—no one. Nothing on earth is equal to Christ. Through his prophet Isaiah, our Lord is instructing us on how to read scriptures, how to measure the word of God. Earlier in Chapter 40 Isaiah wrote, “The grass withereth, the flower fadeth: but the word of our God shall stand forever.”
That is God’s message, isn’t it?. God’s word is the straight and narrow path. Any divagation from that path leads to sorrow. God teaches us of the vanity of man when compared to his majesty. What man does fades as a flower. What God does endures forever.
