Season 6, Podcast 95, Isaiah 40:1-11, “Comfort Ye My People.”
The Primary focus of Isaiah is Christ. His ministry began when he saw Christ in vision.
Isaiah 4:1-3
In the year that king Uzziah died I saw also the Lord sitting upon a throne, high and lifted up, and his train filled the temple. Above it stood the seraphims: each one had six wings; with twain he covered his face, and with twain he covered his feet, and with twain he did fly. And one cried unto another, and said, Holy, holy, holy, is the Lord of hosts: the whole earth is full of his glory.
Central to Isaiah’s message is hope in Christ. Only the wicked need to fear. All who come to Christ, who keep his commandments, and who endure to the end are the seed of Abraham and are counted among the chosen of God. Righteousness, not blood lineage, determine who live with God for eternity. Isaiah counsels.
Isaiah 40:1-2
Comfort ye, comfort ye my people, saith your God. Speak ye comfortably to Jerusalem, and cry unto her, that her warfare is accomplished, that her iniquity is pardoned: for she hath received of the Lord’s hand double for all her sins.
Isaiah’s message is clear. Those who do not keep God’s commandment are led into captivity. That is symbolized by the scattering of Israel and by the fall of Babylon. The primary villain, of course, is Satan who will be conquered.
Isaiah 27:1
"In that day the Lord with his sore and great and strong sword shall punish leviathan the piercing serpent, even leviathan that crooked serpent; and he shall slay the dragon that is in the sea."
Only Christ will triumph. Isaiah prophesies of the birth of Christ.
Isaiah 9:6
For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace. Of the increase of his government and peace there shall be no end, upon the throne of David, and upon his kingdom, to order it, and to establish it with judgment and with justice from henceforth even for ever. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will perform this.
Isaiah prophesies of the Second Coming of Christ.
Isaiah 40:3-5
The voice of him that crieth in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make straight in the desert a highway for our God. Every valley shall be exalted, and every mountain and hill shall be made low: and the crooked shall be made straight, and the rough places plain: And the glory of the Lord shall be revealed, and all flesh shall see it together: for the mouth of the Lord hath spoken it.
Perhaps no other prophet speaks more of the Millennial day than the prophet Isaiah. Justice will be restored.
Isaiah 1:25-27
And I will turn my hand upon thee, and purely purge away thy dross, and take away all thy tin: And I will restore thy judges as at the first, and thy counsellors as at the beginning: afterward thou shalt be called, The city of righteousness, the faithful city. Zion shall be redeemed with judgment, and her converts with righteousness.
Notice that Isaiah prophecies that judges will be restored. No kings, except the King of Kings and Lord of Lords, which is Jesus Christ, shall rule during the Millennium. The Lord never intended for his people to be ruled by kings. The model for government was to be ruled by true prophets and righteous judges. It is a kind of theocratic democracy. God calls the prophets. The people elect the judges. In the millennium righteous judgment shall be restored.
Isaiah 2:2-5
And it shall come to pass in the last days, that the mountain of the Lord’s house shall be established in the top of the mountains, and shall be exalted above the hills; and all nations shall flow unto it.
