Season 6, Podcast 90, Isaiah 35:1-10, “Come to Zion.”

Chapter 35 stands in sharp contrast to Chater 34. In 35 we read:

Isaiah 35:1

The wilderness and the solitary place shall be glad for them; and the desert shall rejoice, and blossom as the rose.

That, of course, is speaking of the Millenium. In 34 we read

Isaiah 34:11

But the cormorant and the bittern shall possess it; the owl also and the raven shall dwell in it: and he shall stretch out upon it the line of confusion, and the stones of emptiness.

Chapter 34 is speaking of the time just before the Millennium. The literary term is ‘antithetical parallelism.’ Just prior to the Second Coming of Christ, the land shall become desolate, uninhabitable except for cormorants, bitterns, owls, and ravens. After the Second Coming of Christ the desert shall blossom as a rose.

In the Millennium a great restoration will take place, and the earth will return to its former beauty.

Isaiah 35:2

It shall blossom abundantly, and rejoice even with joy and singing: the glory of Lebanon shall be given unto it, the excellency of Carmel and Sharon, they shall see the glory of the Lord, and the excellency of our God.

Before the devastation, Lebanon was known for its tall cedars; Mount Carmel was known for ‘lush vegetation, rich harvests, and abundant nature.’ Carmel means orchard or vineyard. Sharon was known for its “rich soil, green pastures, and abundant plant life.’

In Chapter 34, just prior to the Millennium, we have a different view.

Isaiah 34:13

And thorns shall come up in her palaces, nettles and brambles in the fortresses thereof: and it shall be an habitation of dragons, and a court for owls.

During the Millennium the weak shall become strong, and the Lord will save the righteous.

Isaiah 35:3-4

Strengthen ye the weak hands, and confirm the feeble knees. Say to them that are of a fearful heart, Be strong, fear not: behold, your God will come with vengeance, even God with a recompence; he will come and save you.

Just prior to the Millennium, the Lord’s vengeance shall be against the wicked.

Isaiah 34:2-3, 8

For the indignation of the Lord is upon all nations, and his fury upon all their armies: he hath utterly destroyed them, he hath delivered them to the slaughter. Their slain also shall be cast out, and their stink shall come up out of their carcases, and the mountains shall be melted with their blood….  For it is the day of the Lord’s vengeance, and the year of recompences for the controversy of Zion.

During the Millennium, spiritual blindness shall be lifted.

Isaiah 35:5

Then the eyes of the blind shall be opened, and the ears of the deaf shall be unstopped.

That is in sharp contrast to the curse that was placed upon them earlier.

Isaiah 6:10-12

Make the heart of this people fat, and make their ears heavy, and shut their eyes; lest they see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and understand with their heart, and convert, and be healed. Then said I, Lord, how long? And he answered, Until the cities be wasted without inhabitant, and the houses without man, and the land be utterly desolate, And the Lord have removed men far away, and there be a great forsaking in the midst of the land.

In our noisy world where so many spend their time chasing money, fame, power, position, fortune, prestige, applause, and pleasure, we overlook the fact that we are dual beings. We have both a physical body, subject to the temptations of the flesh, and a spirit body as immortal as God himself. The physical body turns to dust; the immortal spirit never dies, and yet we sometimes allow the natural man to so overpower the spiritual man that we become deaf and blind to the things of God.
