Season 6 Podcast 36 Book of Revelation “Opening of the Seven Seals, Chapter 21:1-8 “The New Jerusalem Pt 1.”
Christ came to earth and gained a mortal body during the meridian of time. He only lived on the earth between 33 and 34 years. Biblical scholars tell us that he began his ministry, according to Jewish law, at age 30 and taught for 3 & ½ years. He will come again just prior to the Millennium, a glorified, resurrected being, and cleanse the earth and reign 1000 years. Then he shall return a third time which will mark the end of the world.
So much emphasis is placed on the First and Second comings that we perhaps diminish the importance of the Third coming. Revelation 21 is speaking, not of the Second Coming, but of the Third Coming, which is very dramatic and very sweeping. During the Second Coming, the earth is changed into a paradise which we simply refer to as The Millennium. ccDuring the Third Coming, however, the old earth melts with fervent heat and is cleansed from all impurities. In turn there is a new earth and a new heaven. That means two things. One the earth is glorfied and celestialized and Two the earth is removed from its present orbit, supposedly near the throne of God.
Revelation 21:1
“And I saw a new heaven and a new earth: for the first heaven and the first earth were passed away; and there was no more sea.”
This cleansing was spoken of during Christ’s ministry. Matthew 24 is unique among the four gospels for it speaks of end time. Christ is preaching only to his apostles as they sit with him upon the Mount of Olives overlooking Jerusalem. First he tells them of the fate of Jerusalem and the destruction of the temple, and he then speaks of his Second Coming. However, he alludes to the end of the world but only to emphasize that his words will all be fulfilled.
Matthew 24:35
“Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away.”
That means, of course, that everything on the old earth, including all life, shall be entirely destroyed, and there shall be a kind of resurrection. Once, the earth, in the days of Noah, was cleansed by water, symbolizing a baptism. In the end of the earth, it shall be cleansed by fire. All impurities will be gone, and the earth will be prepared for a new form of life, a celestial form of life. Isaiah also speaks of the end of the world.
Isaiah 65:17
“For, behold, I create new heavens and a new earth: and the former shall not be remembered, nor come into mind.”
Peter also, in very dramatic language, speaks of the end of the world.
2 Peter 3:10
“But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up.”
We must separate the Second Coming of Christ from the Third, or final, coming of Christ. After the elements of the earth melt with fervent heat, then comes down the Holy City, New Jerusalem.
Revelation 21:2
“And I John saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband.”
