Season 6 Podcast 31, “What is Real?”
In answering the question, What is Real? We must take into account the fact that we are dual beings. We have both a spiritual body and a temporal body. Life is in the spirit body.
Intelligence, consciousness, freewill, thought, opinions, desires—those are all spiritual. Without the spirit, the temporal body dies. Another way of saying that is at death the spirit leaves the body and goes back to heaven where it came from.
Everything the spirit takes with it is spiritual. Everything that lies in the grave with the dismantling body is temporal and remains in the grave.
Before we received our mortal bodies, we were spirits in the image of our Heavenly Father living in a spiritual world, also made of matter, but very fine, even invisible to mortal eyes, yet as immortal as the elements from which we came. We were subject to the laws of God. Those who disobeyed the laws of God were cast out of heaven. The Savior said,
“I beheld Satan as lightning fall from heaven.” (Luke 10:18)
Those who obeyed the laws of God fought the war in heaven on the side of Christ, led by Michael, the archangel.
Revelation 12:7 - 11
“And there was war in heaven: Michael and his angels fought against the dragon; and the dragon fought and his angels, And prevailed not; neither was their place found any more in heaven. And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him. And I heard a loud voice saying in heaven, Now is come salvation, and strength, and the kingdom of our God, and the power of his Christ: for the accuser of our brethren is cast down, which accused them before our God day and night. And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of their testimony; and they loved not their lives unto the death.”
The war was fought over agency. Everyone who came to this earth to gain a mortal body fought on the side of Christ under the leadership of Michael to guarantee freedom of conscience.
In heaven we were not subject to death or to entropy or to the temporal laws of this mortal world. We were subject only to spiritual laws; however, those laws, based on the principle of causality, had absolute consequences. Even in the world of spirits we had agency and could choose between good and evil.
Those who followed Satan were cast down to the earth with him, but remained spirits. Once called by noble names in heaven, having lost their identity in a mortal world which recognizes only mortal matter, on earth, invisible, they are simply called demons or devils or evil spirits. They are visible to each other, but invisible to those who once in heaven’s bliss called them friends till internecine war made them enemies. Being able to see but not feel, the followers of Satan adjusted their armor against a mortal enemy who can feel, but not see. The battle that raged in heaven continues to rage on earth. The enemies’ (mortal man) new-found joy increases the misery of the fallen, and the blind disdain of mortals toward immortal spirits injures their pride and inflames their hatred and intensifies their fiery resolve to bring misery and captivity to every former brother and sister that breathes. Their former memories are untouched by the veil that holds the memories of their forgetful friends; they blindly follow their leader who
“as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour:” (1 Peter 5:8)
Those hateful spirits who followed Lucifer came to earth, forever bodiless, to torment those who sided with Michael to cast their rebellious spirits out of heaven.
