Season 6 Podcast 23 Book of Revelation “Opening of the Seven Seals, Chapter 18:14-24 “Babylon cont.”
Last week we studied Revelation 18:1-13 which describes the fall of Babylon. This week we shall conclude the chapter, beginning with verse 14.
Revelation 18:14
“And the fruits that thy soul lusted after are departed from thee, and all things which were dainty and goodly are departed from thee, and thou shalt find them no more at all.”
Notice that it is the soul that lusted after the fruits of Babylon. The soul is comprised of the body and the spirit. That means that not only did they satisfy the natural man in Babylon, but they also worshiped the idols of the world rather than put their trust in God.
Christ does not abandon those who worship him. Those who worshiped in Babylon, however, are deserted by those things they trusted. Many prophecies of the Holy Scripture have predicted the destruction of the wicked. What sets Babylon apart is stated above, “thou shalt find them no more at all.”
This is end time. The destruction of all the wicked and the Second Coming of Christ is imminent. The destruction of Babylon is part of the purification of the earth in preparation for his coming. The destruction of Babylon is “the judgment of the great whore that sitteth upon many waters.” She contains “the abominations of the earth.” These are the ones who “made war with the lamb, and the lamb shall overcome them: for he is Lord of lords, and King of kings.”
The waters represent “Peoples, and multitudes, and nations, and tongues.” In other words, Babylon symbolizes all the wicked of the entire earth just prior to Christ’s Coming. Babylon is destroyed by global war. Previously we were told, “And the ten horns which thou sawest upon the beast, these shall hate the whore, and shall make her desolate and naked, and shall eat her flesh, and burn her with fire.” Remember the two beasts in Revelation 13. The first beast rises up out of the sea, having seven heads and ten horns. In Revelation 18 the sea is defined as peoples, and multitudes, and nations, and tongues.” It represents the evil rulers of those nations. They were given power by Satan but didn’t know it. The second beast is related to Babylon. He comes out of the earth camouflaged as a lamb. He is the beast that symbolizes the wealth of Babylon.
Revelation 13:16-17
“And he causeth all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and bond, to receive a mark in their right hand, or in their foreheads: And that no man might buy or sell, save he that had the mark, or the name of the beast, or the number of his name.”
That economic empire is going to fall, meaning all the governments of the earth will be destroyed. Notice who mourns the destruction of Babylon the most.
Revelation 18:15-16
“The merchants of these things, which were made rich by her, shall stand afar off for the fear of her torment, weeping and wailing, And saying, Alas, alas, that great city, that was clothed in fine linen, and purple, and scarlet, and decked with gold, and precious stones, and pearls!”
The merchants aren’t repenting. They are weeping and wailing for the loss of their wealth. That is a description of pure despair for without their wealth they have nothing. They have lost their power. They have lost their influence. They have lost their luxurious lifestyle. They have lost their soul for their names are not written in the book of life.
One is reminded of the words of the Savior in the Sermon on the Mount.
Matthew 6:19-21
“Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal: But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal: For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.”
